Portable Appliance Testing is an important part of the management of Health & Safety Regulation.
Portable Appliance Testing is essential as every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained and in efficient working order and in good repair. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 puts the duty of care upon both employer and the employees to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises – this includes the self-employed.
All Portable equipment must be checked and serviced by a professional or independent company, employees can maintain a high level of housekeeping and user check to minimise the daily risks.
Portable Appliance Testing includes both visual and electrical checks on every portable appliance in the premises, to ensure that they are performing correctly and safely. A visual inspection includes checking of the plug and the cable as well as any other obvious points of interest on the device. Following the visual check, for Class 1 devices will be subject to test electrical signals to identify any faults. Any devices that do not pass the test or are close to failure will be stated in the final report produced following portable appliance testing.
