Emergency Lighting Testing Requirements: Monthly and Annual Tests Under BS 5266-1:2025

Emergency lighting has to work the moment the normal supply fails, often after months of standing idle. Regular testing is the only way to know the batteries, lamps and changeover devices will perform. The requirements below follow BS 5266-1:2025 and BS EN 50172.

Monthly function test

Every emergency luminaire and exit sign is switched to emergency mode for a short period, long enough to confirm each lamp lights, without draining the batteries. The test is usually carried out by simulating a failure of the normal lighting supply with a test key switch. Results go in the logbook.

Annual full-duration test

Once a year every fitting must run for its full rated duration, usually three hours, and still be lit at the end. Because batteries need up to 24 hours to recharge, the annual test is best carried out out of hours or in alternate zones so the building is never left without cover.

What your logbook should contain

Who needs emergency lighting tests?
